10 Tips to Making Your Career Choice

Your career choice is one of the choices not to be taken lightly as it will have a very big impact on your life. This one choice would determine what you will do to earn for the rest of your life, so it’s only just that you take the time and weigh all considerations in making this one important choice. You don’t want to spend four years in college only to get stuck in an unfulfilling and boring job. Here are some tips you might consider to help you in making this choice:

1. Start with your interests
Ask yourself the question: What is it that you really want to do for the rest of your life? What work values are important to you? Would you like something that would release your creativity or something more analytical? Remember that this choice is a long term decision, so choose something that you know you are passionate for. You don’t want to be in a situation where you dread going to your work.

2. Hot Jobs are not all that hot
You might hear about certain jobs being more popular and initially earning more, but don’t make it your primary consideration in making your career choice. While certain jobs would certainly be more popular than others, see what appeals to you. Those hot jobs might not be as hot when you’re the one already in it.

3. Salary is not the only thing that’s important
While a hefty amount for a salary is really appealing, you should realize that it comes at a price, that is your time and stress. Take into consideration in general what lifestyle you’d rather have rather than just the salary you’re going to get. Besides, if you’re really good in your field then the money would certainly come, even if it’s a bit later.

4. Take Career Tests
If you’re having problems identifying what it is that you want to pursue, you might want to take career tests and see the results. Take note however that career tests are not absolute, so don’t take the results as the right choices immediately. You might also want to consult with your school counselors, they will be more than happy to assist you in making the right career choice.

5. Talk with other people
If you’re already considering some choices, talk with some people who are already working in those jobs. Ask what’s good and bad, and see if you still like it after you read firsthand stories from those people who are in it.

6. Read material regarding possible career choices
Once you at least know what values and interests are important to you, look up possible career choices that are aligned with those values. Assess each one and see which are better fit for you, as well as the skill set that each entails.

7. Assess your skills
Once you know the skill set of your choice, assess yourself based on those skills. Take note of your strengths and possible areas of improvement.

8. Take opportunities to improve your skillset
If you know your areas that needs to be improved, seek opportunities to improve it. If you know you lack in leadership skills, try stepping up in your classroom groups or in your organizations.

9. Take an internship or on-the-job training
The best way to know if a career path is good for you is to experience it firsthand. Try to get an internship or OJT on a company and see for yourself if you like the experience.

10. You don’t have to stick to your original choice
Okay, if after all those tips you suddenly realize that you preferred something else, don’t be afraid. Many people think that all the time and effort spent on pursuing one career would be wasted if they transfer to another career, but that’s not true. In fact a lot of skills are transferable and applicable to other jobs. For example, many business managers do not even have a business related degree, but they do have the skills to do their job from their experience in their previous careers.
